In fact, the world is called Father Earth (rather than mother nature) and he. The concept of the world being in a cycle of “seasons” with the 5th always being something unknown and devastating that basically resets the world for humanity make the world itself a huge player in the story. Second, most books can be classified as either character-driven or plot-driven. How will the characters connect? How do their timelines overlap? Who is the narrator? And what broke the world in the first place? The result is a mystery you are constantly trying to piece together. Paired with this story line are two others, which do not perfectly align. It challenges you to directly experience the story, and actually place yourself in the shoes of Essun. Part of that is due to the 2nd person narration. First off, despite being a fantasy novel, this is one of the most intellectually stimulating books I’ve read in a long time.
